Do you want to join a Town committee, board, or commission?
Most positions are appointed by the Select Board, but some are elected positions (Board of Health, Cemetery Commission, Constable, Library Board of Trustees, Moderator, Municipal Light Plant Board, Planning Board, School Committee, and Select Board). All Town Officials, either appointed or elected, are sworn in by the Town Clerk.
To be appointed as a Town Official
Reach out to the committee chair to ask questions and/or attend several committee meetings to get a feel of how the committee operates. Let the committee chair know when you're ready to join. You'll submit a completed Application Form to the Town Administrator when you've been recommended for appointment by the Select Board.
To be elected as a Town Official
1. Pick up nomination papers at the Town Clerk Office. You will receive campaign finance paperwork and fill out a receipt for same. This is a good time to ask any questions you might have about the election process.
2. Collect signatures. You need signatures from at least 20 registered Shutesbury voters. It's a good idea to get more signatures than you need, just in case any of the signatures are illegible or from someone not actually registered to vote in Shutesbury.
3. Return your signed nomination papers to the Town Clerk Office no later than 5pm on the 14th day before the Local Election.
You will need to file campaign finance paperwork, even if you are a write-in candidate, and whether or not you are spending any money. You can get the required forms from the Town Clerk Office and contact the Office of Campaign and Political Finance if you have questions.
